What would you do if you were doing your homework like normal, but you made a mistake and went for your rubber (eraser to you Americans)? You would expect it to rub out your mistake. You would not want it to smudge the words until they are indecipherable. Seriously!
When you go to the shops to buy erasers, they have to work. You don't want to be stuck with a cheap material that doesn't do anything!
